GRIFFIN INDEX
TO THE GEORGE EDWARD ANDERSON
PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION

Clem and Mont Allred
1903

During the last half of the nineteenth century and into the early part of the twentieth, George Edward Anderson took thousands of photographs in his traveling tent gallery. Many of these photographs were of historical sites, connected with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but a great many of them were of ordinary people, men, women and children... families, living during this time period in Utah.
There are several written documentaries concerning this remarkable man and his work, but none excels the one written by Rell G. Francis and published by the University of Nebraska Press, 1979, entitled The Utah Photographs of George Edward Anderson.
This collection consists of two parts, the surviving glass negatives being housed at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and the other, a microfilm collection belonging to the L.D.S. Church Historical Department.
Anyone with an interest in their ancestors (who lived in Utah) or who is connected with the LDS Church, will be interested in the index, as well as the actual photographs. ACCESSIBILITY, not the existence of the material, is what is in question.
An inquiry, made at the photo archives at B.Y.U. will make it possible for you to either locate and request a copy of the photograph, or give you a referral # to the photograph on microfilm in S.L.C.
Current technology in the form of computers and digital cameras, gives one "hope" for positive results. However, only your continued interest in this project will insure this eventuality, along with improvements in this index.
